"Who would want to make a career out of cutting egetables" wondered Stephen Poonnen when he thought of putting together a team for his startup that produces fresh-cut vegetables. He knew, right from the start, that he couldn't afford to have people with Ivy degrees on his team. Simple folk, who wouldn't mind getting their hands dirty, and those with a semi-urban background was what he knew would work for his business.

Stephen himself had a farm and business background, and he thought it would do a world of good to his business if somebody with an industrial background would come on board. So when a friend offered to introduce him to an Imports executive with an MNC, Stephen decided to give it a shot. And it was sheer poetic justice that he met his first recruit, Krishnappa, under a tree! Something clicked, and the two of them teamed up, and spent the next three months looking for a place and other members to join the team.

While between them they had technical, commercial and executive expertise, WYNBRANDS needed someone who knew Food in the first place! Thus Shyla, with a degree in home science and canning industry experience came on Board. The trio trained at, Mysore (CFTRI). With ITI trained Manjunath to look after plant and machinery, Hyderabad operations took wing. When Triveni, a Masters in Biotech joined, the WYNBRANDS family took shape.

At the cutting and packing level, WNBRANDS mainly hired women from areas near to the plant location, with a minimum of high school education. Now, except for the technical, administrative and logistics support, its workforce mostly comprises of women. Wynbrands is thus doing its bit for empowering the rural woman, apart from carrying out the government's agenda of helping farmers.

Not just that, WYNBRANDS has encouraged its employees to pursue higher studies, and has enabled individuals to become self-employed. For example, Govinda, an employee of WYNBRANDS, after delivering the day's fresh-cut vegetables to various outlets in Bangalore, runs his vehicle for his own business for the rest of the day.

Today, Stephen is proud of Team WYNBRANDS. Dedicated, self-motivated and honest, WYNBRANDS' employees keep up with the stringent demands of hygiene, time and integrity and the service orientation specified by the nature of their jobs.

As Stephen puts it, you can't stop a veggie once you get going, and that goes for his team as well. A "Wynning" team, surely! < Back

How did you go about building your team?

While building our team, we basically considered the attitude of the candidates and their need for a job. We were a non-established business - a pioneer. As there were no norms, no pre-determined templates that one could follow in our business, it was a new concept and we had to create our own path, set the rules of the game by sheer on-the-job experience and customer guidance. Handling fresh produce means visiting farms, rural areas and markets which do not offer very cozy environments. The attitude to service and learn from customer interaction was most important. We knew our journey would be a long one and therefore we needed people who could find a sense of achievement in the small steps we took and the small success we achieved. So our team mostly comprises of people with a rural rather than an urban background.

What are the things you are most proud of in your team?

Mutual understanding, team spirit, excellent guidance with clear communication, enthusiasm, commitment, the attitude of taking up a challenge, the ability of time management and dynamism. We are rewarded with customer support. Rest if you may but don't QUIT has been our guiding philosophy.

Another important thing is that all of us at the company enjoy each others successes. We are always keen on learning and the company gives us enough space and opportunity for enhancing our knowledge base and our commercial sense. We also have a never-say-die attitude. Most importantly we maintain a calm and cool attitude even in tense situations.

How do you want to see your business grow?

We hope that in a very short span of time we should be a national player prepared to face competition. We want to grow with our customers, provide them with solutions for needs we can meet and create our own unique identity. We would also like to re-enter the B2C space and become a household name in 'safe convenience vegetables'- a segment we created. We want to make ourselves worthy of an international collaboration as we move up the value chain.

What was the most challenging day for the team?

We are in the business of handling perishables, i.e. fresh vegetables each and every day, which is challenging enough by itself. But one memorable day was when there was demand for a large quantity of an exotic vegetable for our customers. We could give no excuses, therefore each and every team member went around the city, searched for it and we were finally ended up collecting a decent serviceable quantity both at Bangalore and Hyderabad.

What's the thing you love most about your company?

We love the work environment at our company, where there is an opportunity for each and every one to grow along with the company. We are motivated at every stage, and are individually credited for the successes. Our bosses never treat us as employees, but give us responsibility as well as freedom to execute and also fail.

What's the value you relate to most about your company?

At Wynbrands, we are proud that we are truly helping farmers. 70% of India's population still depends on farming as a vocation. We have also created value addition to fresh farm produce by positioning ourselves as a service provider offering reliability, convenience and food safety. Our service will see greater adoption and we will need to scale a higher bar when it comes to service levels.

If there is one thing you want to change about your company, what would it be?

At present we simulate a chill environment with zero power for the transportation of final product (fresh cut vegetables) to maintain the cold chain, we would like to implement more efficient, long duration and clean technologies as we try and grow geographically.
We would like to become a Food Component player of repute known for innovative delivery capabilities.
We need to grow in size and have appropriate structures in place that support growth and enthusiasm.

Seems like a growing business with a marquee customer list. Has achieved breakeven, as well. Identified a relatively humdrum need (no offence meant!) and seems to have honed in to satisfy the same. Well placed to prosper as the increasing disposable incomes of urban consumers translates into growth for the business. The firm is addressing a much felt market need. Considering the poor supply chain infrastructure for agri-products, providing the backward linkage for fresh produce ? with value added services - is a good idea.

The concept would face competition from other firms like RKHS, agri-extension services of agri-produce businesses, and the firms planning to offer fresh produce at a wholesale level (e.g. Khet Se from Tatas).

Introducing modern practices to agriculture and rural areas would help in capturing value in the agri supply chain. Scale and efficiency will be critical in building a successful business.
